The assignments we have completed in Media 160 have
opened up a different world to me. Coming into my third year at Hunter College,
I had no experience what so ever in production. I came across many challenges
and many surprises. I was surprised with how much fun it was to be able to
create something. Although it was an assignment that had a deadline, and that
it often added stress and pressure, the feeling of creating something that
initially starts from a thought in your mind is so satisfying. Now knowing the
basics of editing, I feel a want to become a bit more involved with production
ideas and try to delve into the production field a bit more.
That being said, some surprises weren’t always so
pleasant. I was shocked at how meticulous and time consuming editing was. It
was an unpredicted countless hours of shooting, logging, editing, and brain
storming to come up with a short 5 minute clip. When I heard it was a five
minute clip, I honestly did not think it would be more time consuming than a
regular project. However, I quickly learned that however fun it may be, being
successful in production means being extremely organized, and extremely
efficient. In fact, it may even take longer than a regular assignment. Since
there is no right or wrong, the time that it takes for an idea to strike in
your head can be anywhere from 1 minute, to 3 days. However, once that idea
does strike, let the fun begin.
If I could change anything about my project, I would change
the very first couple of steps. I would put much more thought into the project
as a whole, rather than tackling each assignment separately. As the assignments
began to sync into once, I felt the pressure of changing the previous
assignment. The more thought I put into the project, the more I felt like my
ideas were only getting better and better. With a more clear focus on what
exactly it was I wanted to do in the long term, I would be able to become much
more organized, motivated, and efficient in working.
Ever since I began producing short clips or images, I can’t
help but watch movies through a different perspective. I see professional
movies, and I think of how seamless everything is. All the moves that directors
make are perfection, and the clarity of the images they had in their creative
minds is impeccable.
