I decided to take this class because I've taken a few media courses during my years at Hunter and thought I'd continue on the path in my last semester here. The internet is something I'm extremely familiar with but to no extent do I know about programming or anything of that nature. Judging from the initial class, it seems we are dwelling into the history and basics of it, which is a good thing since I would like to know more about something that I utilize on a daily basis whether it be for entertainment or educational purposes.
A topic that is very much related to the internet is the recent SOPA and PIPA proposals. These acts would limit internet freedom and use censorship under the argument that it would help fight against copyright infringement and better protect intellectual property. In response to this, on January 18th, 2012, Wikipedia, among many other sites held a 'black-out' in which their sites were inaccessible for an entire 24 hours and site-goers were provided with numbers to their Congress members and representatives to voice their dissatisfaction. This put a damper on the acts and showed the level of backlash for them. This shows the disdain individuals have for the censorship of the internet.
