Test Blog: Privacy and Tracking on the Internet

So this is my first test blog for Internet and Society.  I took this class as I thought it would be interesting to see what has happened to society over time since the internet became the internet.  I remember when AOL came out and you could talk to other users and I thought it was the most fascinating thing. And then more followed with my learning of search engines and eventually social media, hence leading to my obsession with Facebook.  The internet is a really amazing thing and I must admit that my life academically is much easier because of it.  The thought of writing a research paper and having to go through the entire library makes me feel exhausted just thinking about it, when now I could simply put in a word in Google and get thousands of results.  But the internet does come with a price and I wonder what that will lead into the future.  I have noticed that when I go to a site, or my beloved Facebook, certain ads pop up that follow me throughout my searches ont he internet which led me to this article:

Apparently Facebook was using cookies to track its users and see what sites they were going to in order to better market to them.  While they may see it as a wise marketing strategy, I see it as an invasion of privacy.  The great part of the internet is the freedom to search what you want, and the thought that I am being tracked makes me a bit uneasy about the internet now, and what kind of tracking can happen in the future.  Are new developments going to come out on the internet that get rid of all privacy?
